Industries Paid for Top Regulators' Travel

The chief of the Consumer Product Safety Commission and her predecessor have taken dozens of trips at the expense of the toy, appliance and children's furniture industries and others they regulate.

There is no conflict of interest in this case given the failures to regulate any person or item! Seriously, the continued failure of the regulatory system in the U.S. represents one of the greatest threats to quality of life and security. Far more U.S. citizens die from white-collar crimes than from terrorist attacks.

The fact that such blatant corruption exists in the CPSC along side the failure to protect consumers is just another indication of the crisis that currently exists. The only questions that remain: how long until the system fails completely and when will the public put white-collar crime in the proper perspective relative to conventional crime and other public policy issues.
