Crime rates are down, yet incarceration rates are skyrocketing. Illegal immigration apprehensions have been in decline since '04, yet CCA - through the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) pursued SB 1070 to fill their detention facility beds and increase profits through tax dollars.
They have done the same thing through ALEC's "model legislation" efforts that increased the number of laws, increased sentence length and removed judicial discretion in sentencing through "truth in sentencing" laws that replaced a judge's discretion with mandatory guidelines.
Now we have another player - also closely related to ALEC, CCA and other corporate profiteers - wanting to break into the "game". Evangelical Christians want to establish a Christian only private prisons in Oklahoma,Kansas and California. Corrections Concepts Inc. run by Bill Robinson is behind these efforts (http://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/12/4/925563/-Christian-Prison-to-be-built-in-Wakita,-Ok-and-to-use-Prison-Industry-under-Federal-PIECP-Program-).
At some point the public has to realize the true cost of all this manipulation to profit off of incarceration - not just in tax dollars, but also what it is costing us as a society. To continue to allow this kind of profitable enterprise to flourish by sacrificing our youths to corporate run "juvenile detention facilities" is setting these youths up for a life of living in prison. It is all designed to earn the most profit with no real interest in rehabilitation, as that goes against the desire for profits.Bob Sloanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14142796764110741191noreply@blogger.com
