About eight years ago, a company called Beef Products Inc. had the novel idea of injecting its ground beef with ammonia to kill deadly E. coli and salmonella. The Agriculture Department pronounced the idea effective and exempted Beef Products Inc. from routine tests. About 5000 Americans die each year from eating contaminated food. About 3000 people died on 9/11. Compare the response from this sad event to the death and suffering each year from unsafe food.
As this story points out, Agriculture officials were not even aware of the Beef Product test results. Where is the talk about the intelligence failures and the failure to connect the dots?
