The tide is slowly turning

The State Legislature voted Friday to repeal the death penalty, meaning New Mexico could become the 15th U.S. state without capital punishment if the governor signs the bill into law.

Wow! This is good news for those of us who understand that the death penalty is flawed public policy. Let's hope that Governor Richardson follows through with this momentum and signs the bill into law.

Other states are considering abolition, so we will await further development as the various legislative sessions wind down.
